A Los Angeles County man is in custody after crashing a stolen box truck into a concrete barrier during a police pursuit on Monday, August 10th.

A local CBS News affiliate reports that the chase, which lasted 45 minutes, began near Santa Clarita at around 9:30 am. The driver attempted to flee after Los Angeles County Sheriff Department deputies ran the license plate and discovered that it had been stolen from a moving company near Fresno.

The police, along with California Highway Patrol, followed the truck as it swerved between lanes along the 5 Freeway at speeds up to 80 mph. The truck crossed through Sylmar, Burbank and Glendale, coming very close to hitting other vehicles.

As the truck reached Boyle Heights, traffic began to increase. The driver of the truck attempted to drive along the shoulder and cut across the grass. He then tried to drive the truck through a concrete barrier, only to abandon it and attempt to flee on foot.

After running a few hundred feet, however, the suspect slowed down, appearing out of breath. He then hid behind a tree and a Jeep, where CHP officers found him. The police were able to quickly bring the suspect into custody.

“The concrete wall is about an 8 foot span that he pushed out on the number one lane on the transition road,” states CHP Officer Ryan Bejar. “For him to enter where he is, he had nowhere to go.”

Due to its durability, concrete is the single most widely used material in the world. Despite the crash, the stolen truck appeared to sustain only minor damage.
