A Michigan man’s girlfriend told him not to buy scratch-off lottery tickets when stopping at a gas station. Ignoring her decree, he bought one anyways, and wound up winning a cool $1 million.
“I stopped to get gas and the pump didn’t print out a receipt so I grabbed a couple of $5 winning tickets and went inside the store,” the man, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Michigan Lottery. “On my way in, my girlfriend told me not to buy any lottery tickets, but I didn’t listen. I bought one 50X The Cash ticket and paid for it with my two $5 winners.” Not wanting to be in the doghouse for his purchase, the man kept the scratch-off hidden from his significant other all day, until he finally got a moment to himself to play it. “I scratched the ticket in the bathroom and thought I was having a heart attack when I saw it was a $1 million winner,” the lucky winner told the Michigan Lottery, as reported by ABC-13. “I showed the ticket to my parents and neither of them believed me. We immediately went to the computer to look the game up online and read the instructions again. That’s when it finally started to sink in that I had won big.” The lottery withholds 25% off the top of any winnings for federal tax, and depending on where a participant lives and his or her respective tax bracket, withholds another six to nine percent for state taxes. After taxes, the man will get to take a home a one-time lump sum pay out of $634,517. Though it’s far from the whole $1 million he initially won, it’s still enough for the lucky winner to take his lottery-hating girlfriend on the European dream vacation they’d always talked about. “We’ve always wanted to go to Scotland, and this will give us the opportunity to do that,” said the winner. “Maybe next time my girlfriend won’t be as skeptical when I’m feeling lucky and want to buy a Lottery ticket.” |
