Finland is known worldwide for its sauna culture; all over the country, one can find spas in hotels, schools, and even homes so Fins can partake in this soothing cultural ritual. The Fins have also figured out that saunas can be much more than just relaxing — a study of Finnish men over the course of 20 years has shown that frequent sauna baths may help a person live longer.

With this in mind, the Fins have come up with ingenious solutions to get more people to relax in saunas. One hotel, in particular, has taken advantage of the cold Finnish climate and created a sauna made almost completely from snow.

The Arctic SnowHotel and Glass Igloos in Finland has created something quite unique that brings together a perfect mix of hot and cold. Their Snow Sauna is made entirely of compacted snow, and when the snowflakes melt, they create more steam in the room. The only non-wet part of the sauna is two plain wooden benches.

The walls are 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) thick, and as the sauna eventually melts back into the landscape around it, the hotel simply builds another one. The idea that these saunas are completely sustainable, as they use a wood oven instead of electric, is one that really resonates with those looking to relax without having to worry about their carbon footprint.

This interesting sauna idea has taken a full 10 years to come to fruition; the owners of the SnowHotel first created a snow sauna in their own front yard a decade ago.

In addition to these snow saunas, Arctic SnowHotel offers traditional, full wood saunas and an outdoor jacuzzi. They boast that this outdoor jacuzzi will be perfect for watching the Northern Lights in full effect.

So, basking in the snow without feeling cold? The Fins sure have it good.
