One of the most relaxing things you can do with your family is to whisk them away on a camping trip, whether you’re roughing it in a tent or staying in luxurious rustic cabins.
Unfortunately, Wisconsin residents are now being forced to fork over big bucks to enjoy everything Mother Nature has to offer. According to the Tomah Journal in Wisconsin, the state has implemented increased camping fees across the board, impacting everything from property rental, trail passes, and park admissions.
Camping is a common way to escape the daily grind for many families who wish to kick back and relax in a cost-efficient way. In fact, over 42.5 million people went camping in 2011 alone, and a major reason for its general appeal has always been its affordability.
Wisconsin’s camping rates have increased about $6 per night, though this varies with the demand of certain camping spots. Division of Lands administrator Sanjay Olson elaborated on the reason for the price hikes in a recent statement.
“This new rate structure takes into account campsite demand at a property, uniqueness of the camping experience and geographic locations in determining the rate placement of the property,” said Olson.
Wisconsin residents can expect to spend more on property rental rates in addition to the other ancillary costs of going camping. According to Smart Family Finance, the average family spends about $30 per night on items bug spray, sunscreen, firewood, s’mores supplies, and everything else you need while you’re away from home.
While critics say that these increases in costs may alienate many campers who don’t have the necessary funds, Sanjay Olson disputes this theory.
“So far we have not received any complaints,” he said. “Camping (this year) has been fantastic, and we’re already ahead of last year’s record pace.”
If your family loves to camp, you better hope that these price increases don’t make it to your neck of the woods.
